Low Pressure Boiler Engineer: Steam boilers operated not in excess of 15 psi and water boilers operating not in excess of 50 psi and 250° temperature.

Third Class Boiler Engineer: Steam boilers operated not in excess of 150 psi and water boilers operating not in excess of 160 psi and 350° temperature and 150 horse power.

Second Class Boiler Engineer: Steam boilers operated not in excess of 250 psi, water boilers operating not in excess of 375 psi and 450° temperature, and steam-driven machinery not to exceed 100 horsepower per unit except traction and hoisting engines.

First Class Boiler Engineer: All classes, pressures and temperatures of steam and water boilers and steam driven machinery except traction-hoisting engines.

Agricultural Boiler Engineer: Steam boilers that operate not in excess of 150 psi, that are not operated for more than 6 months of the year, and that are not operated for purposes other than the harvesting or processing of agricultural products.

Traction Engineer: Traction engines or boilers on wheels.

1. Education Requirements: None

2. Experience Requirements:
Low Pressure Boiler Engineer: Must have 3 months full-time experience (480 hours) in the operation of a boiler in this classification under an engineer who holds a valid low pressure or higher license or completion of a training course approved by the Department of Labor and Industry specific to low pressure boilers, a minimun of 40 hours experience under a licensed boiler engineer, and pass a written exam.

Third Class Boiler Engineer: Must have 6 months full-time experience (960 hours) in the operation of a boiler in this classification under an engineer holding a valid third class or higher license or completion of a training course approved by the Department of Labor and Industry specific to third class pressure boilers, a minimun of 40 hours experience under a licensed boiler engineer, and pass a written exam.
Second Class Boiler Engineer: Must have 2 years' full-time experience in the operation of a boiler in this classification under an engineer holding a valid second class or first class license; or hold a valid third class license with at least 1 year's full-time actual experience in the operation of a boiler under this classification under an engineer holding a valid second or first class engineer.
First Class Boiler Engineer: Must have 3 years' full-time experience in the operation of a boiler in this classification under an engineer holding a first class license; must hold a valid second class license with at least 1 years full-time actual experience in the operation of a boiler in this classification under an engineer holding a valid first class license; or must hold a valid third class license with at least 2 year's full-time experience in the operation of a boiler under this classification under an engineer which a valid first class license.
Agricultural Boiler Engineer: There are no experience requirements.
Traction Engineer: There are no experience requirements.
3. Examination Information: Required for all classes of licensure. Exams are administered monthly in Helena or at local Job Service by request. Applicants must be pre-approved prior to taking the examination.

4. Renewal Period:Annually on April 1.

5. Renewal Fee: $45.00 effective Feb.1.2005

6. Continuing Education Requirements: None

7. Other Special License Requirements: Must be 18 years of age or older.
